The Man Everyone Remembered
By Deshna · 15 June 2026
Every market has its regulars.
People who come back every week.
People who become part of your routine without you even realising it.
Dad somehow remembered them all.
He'd remember your usual order.
He'd ask how your holiday went.
He'd remember your children's names.
Sometimes people would arrive at the stall looking like they'd had a difficult day, and somehow they'd leave smiling.
That was Dad's gift.
He understood that people came for more than just food.
They came for the welcome.
For the conversation.
For the feeling that someone genuinely remembered them.
While Mum was busy cooking and we were preparing orders, Dad was building something just as important.
Community.
Over the years we met thousands of people.
Some became regular customers.
Many became friends.
Looking back, it's those conversations we remember just as much as the food itself.
One of the things we hope never changes, even though Mumbai Mix now lives online, is that feeling of being welcomed.
Whether someone reads a recipe, joins one of our cooking classes, buys a jar of sauce or simply signs up to our newsletter, we want them to feel exactly the same way people felt when they visited our market stall.
Seen.
Welcomed.
Part of something.
Dad taught us that hospitality isn't about fancy restaurants or perfect service.
It's about making people feel like they're glad they came.
That's something we'll carry with us wherever Mumbai Mix goes next.

Growing up in Mum's kitchen taught me that food is about far more than what's on the plate. Through Mumbai Mix, I'm sharing the recipes, stories and moments that shaped our family, with the hope they become part of yours too.
