Our story
Our story began around the family table
Mumbai Mix began long before the website or the market stall. It began with the recipes passed down through our family, travelling from India to Kenya and eventually finding a home in England, where Mum's cooking became the heart of our family.
Years later, we started sharing that food at local markets. From our very first Mumbai Toastie to freshly made dosas, curries and countless cups of chai, we were lucky enough to meet thousands of wonderful people who became part of our journey.
Today, Mumbai Mix is the next chapter. It's a place to share authentic vegetarian recipes, family traditions, artisan food and the joy of cooking together, so those recipes can find a place in kitchens far beyond our own.

Mumbai Mix beyond the market stall
From our London market stall to cooking on screen, Mumbai Mix has always been about sharing Indian vegetarian food with warmth, confidence and joy.

How our recipes were passed down
Every recipe has a story, and ours begins long before Mumbai Mix ever existed.
Mohini grew up in Kenya as one of eight children in a close-knit Gujarati family. Money wasn't always easy. During difficult times, she and her brother would pick cotton to help support the family while her father worked tirelessly, running various businesses to provide for everyone.
But some of her happiest memories were made in the kitchen.
Her mother believed that learning to cook wasn't something you could get from a cookbook. Instead, she would send Mohini from house to house to learn from family members, neighbours and friends. Every kitchen had something new to teach her.
She learnt how to make samosas by the hundreds alongside her sister and mastered family favourites like papdi and many other traditional Gujarati dishes. These recipes were never written down—they were passed from generation to generation through experience, observation and practice.
After getting married, Mohini's father-in-law recognised that she had another talent. Alongside her husband, she helped run the family's garment business, where her confidence with people and natural ability as a salesperson became just as valuable as her cooking.
Eventually, the family moved to the United Kingdom with their three children and two cousins to begin a new chapter.
Life became busy, but one thing never changed. Every single day, no matter how busy life became, Mohini prepared a fresh home-cooked meal for the whole family.
Many of those same recipes were later shared with thousands of customers through the Mumbai Mix market stall. Today, we're preserving those family recipes so they can continue to be enjoyed by future generations.
Why everything is vegetarian
People often ask why Mumbai Mix focuses on vegetarian food.
The simple answer is that it's the food we know best.
Growing up in a Gujarati family, vegetarian cooking was simply part of everyday life. It was never about limitation—it was about creativity. Using vegetables, lentils, grains and carefully balanced spices, every meal was packed with flavour, colour and comfort.
These are the recipes that have been cooked in our family for generations, and they're the recipes we're proud to share today. Whether you've been vegetarian for years or are simply looking to cook more meat-free meals, we hope you'll discover just how diverse, satisfying and delicious Indian vegetarian cooking can be.
Our mission today
Mumbai Mix exists to make authentic Indian home cooking feel approachable.
We know that Indian cooking can sometimes seem intimidating. Long ingredient lists, unfamiliar spices and techniques passed down through generations can make it difficult to know where to begin.
Our goal is to change that.
Through authentic recipes, cooking classes, family stories and practical guidance, we want to help people cook with confidence and discover the joy of Indian home cooking, one recipe at a time.
Our vision
Mumbai Mix is growing into more than a recipe website.
Our vision is to create a place where people can not only cook authentic Indian food but also learn about the traditions, techniques and stories behind it.
As Mumbai Mix continues to grow, we'll expand our collection of recipes, cooking guides, classes and carefully selected products, always staying true to the family recipes and values that started it all.
Whatever the future holds, our purpose remains the same: sharing authentic Indian home cooking with as many people as possible.
The family behind Mumbai Mix
Mumbai Mix is a true family project.
Mohini is the heart of our recipes. Every dish we share has been inspired by the food she's cooked for family, friends and customers over many years.
Deshna is helping preserve those recipes for future generations, bringing together family traditions with a modern approach so they can be shared with home cooks around the world.
Dimple, a dietitian and enthusiastic home cook, brings her passion for nutrition, practical cooking and making authentic Indian food approachable for everyday life.
Together, we're continuing a family tradition of sharing food, knowledge and hospitality—one recipe at a time.
A few milestones
Looking back, there have been many moments that have shaped the Mumbai Mix journey.
From building our market stall and serving thousands of customers across London, to becoming part of the city's vibrant street food community, appearing on television, teaching cooking classes and now launching the Mumbai Mix website, every milestone has been another opportunity to share the food we love.
Each step has brought us closer to our goal of making authentic Indian home cooking accessible to more people.

Our story is still being written
Mumbai Mix has grown from a family kitchen to market stalls, cooking classes and now an online home for authentic Indian cooking.
But the reason behind it has never changed.
We believe that sharing food brings people together, creates lasting memories and keeps family traditions alive.
Whether you're cooking your first curry, recreating a family favourite or simply exploring Indian food for the first time, we're so glad you've found us.
Welcome to the Mumbai Mix family.
